The Big Six: 30/34 (88,24 %)

Well, they really did not like Rocketman. I could have predicted John Williams and Star Wars but left it out. I knew Jennifer Lopez would not be nominated but I had no guts to leave her out, Kathy Bates is always really tough. But otherwise, could not have done better this year.

I chose Green Book over Roma. I think the Academy will not be ready to choose a Netflix film yet. One step at a time as the film got nominated. Of course it would be great if more boundaries would be broken. In best actor I don't see Rami Malek winning but of course he can. However, I have a feeling that Christian Bale will win. Finally this will be the day for Glenn Close!

22 January 2019

How did I do?

And the nominations are here.

Best picture

A Star is Born
BlacKkKlansman
The Favourite
Green Book
Roma
Vice
Black Panther
Bohemian Rhapsody

Apparently there was a lot love for Black Panther and Bohemian Rhapsody. I guess the times are changing after all.

Actor

Christian Bale - Vice
Bradley Cooper - A Star Is Born
Rami Malek - Bohemian Rhapsody
Viggo Mortensen - Green Book
Ethan Hawke - First Reformed Willem Dafoe - At Eternity's Gate

The last spot was open and I chose Ethan Hawke. I'm happy for Willem, though.

Actress

Emily Blunt - Mary Poppins Returns Yalitza Aparicio - Roma
Glenn Close - The Wife
Olivia Colman - The Favourite
Lady Gaga - A Star Is Born
Melissa McCarthy - Can You Ever Forgive Me?

Well here we go. Yalitza Aparicio is indeed in and it was Emily Blunt who could have been dropped.

Supporting actor

Mahershala Ali - Green Book
Timothee Chalamet - Beautiful Boy Sam Rockwell - Vice
Adam Driver - BlacKkKlansman
Sam Elliott - A Star Is Born
Richard E. Grant - Can You Ever Forgive Me?

Supporting actress

Amy Adams - Vice
Claire Foy - First Man Marina de Tavira - Roma
Regina King - If Beale Street Could Talk
Emma Stone - The Favourite
Rachel Weisz - The Favourite

There was not a lot love for First Man and often films with best actress nominations will bring in a supporting actress as well. This one spot was an open race but I could never have guessed Marina de Tavira.

Director

Bradley Cooper - A Star Is Born Pawel Pawlikowski - Cold War
Alfonso Cuarón - Roma
Peter Farrelly - Green Book Yorgos Lanthimos - The Favourite
Spike Lee - BlacKkKlansman
Adam McKay - Vice

The director category was a surprise. You can usually trust the DGA but this time this went a really separate way.

Overall I think there's too much Black Panther and Bohemian Rhapsody but it's hard to drop them out from most of the categories. They don't seem to be Academy movies but maybe Academy has changed (it never does). Anyway the Oscars are in trouble and they need more audience. This means more spectator friendly actions but the voting still won't probably change for a long time.

But this is the list for now.

Foreign Language Film: A Fantastic Woman
Makeup and Hairstyling: Darkest Hour
Original Score: The Shape of Water
Original Song: This Is Me - The Greates Showman --> Remember Me - Coco
Best picture: The Shape of Water

Pretty well, this is the second best score ever: 20/24. To be honest, this was an easy year. I could have predicted visual effects correctly but nothing else. I felt This Is Me would not win the Song but I could not pick any other either. Pretty good! The big eight 8/8.

The best picture was hard. I feel The Shape of Water is the best choice now but I believe split-vote is possible and Dunkirk wins. We could see Timothy Chalamet, Willem Dafoe and maybe Laurie Metcalf win, but who knows. Acting categories seem very sure but you never really can tell. We'll know everything soon!
