I hope Mickey Rourke wins; I have absolutely nothing against Sean Penn but I am sure he will win once again some day. And please give finally the Oscar to Kate Winslet. I cannot believe there is a chance that the supporting actor would go to anyone except Heath. In supporting actress I cannot go against the general conses (Penelope Cruz) but I still would not be surprised if Marisa Tomei wins. Picture and director will go to Slumdog. In animated feature WALL-E should absolutely win as it won so many awards in the Guilds and with the critics in so many categories - but the academy sometimes votes strangely. If this goes wrong, Kung-Fu Panda wins. The same thing is with Foreign Language Film - the winner is not usually the most expected - therefore you can expect any other win except Waltz with Bashir (my prediction anyway).

It will be Slumdog's night and it will be great!

There were things I had coming: no The Dark Knight. I knew it would'nt make it but I couldn't go against the consensus. I feel sorry for all those who had hoped for it; we all have felt it. I felt it when Fellowship of the Ring did not win the best picture. And most recently when Brokeback Mountain lost best picture for Crash - I was seriously thinking of giving up this hobby.

I had many of my misses on my alternate list or in no guts, no glory - but they do not count, do they. And Brangelina did happen.

It's never been this hard

Oh brother, it's never been this hard... I think. I don't think this will be a good year; too many categories without a clue. I think I have too many nominations for Benjamin Button and The Dark Knight but what can do I. I can't decide against them.

Best picture:

I still don't feel confident about The Dark Knight but I don't have anything to replace it with. Suddenly I don't feel too good about Milk either but I am still keeping it. Maybe WALL-E can happen, who knows.

Best director:

Usually there is one director without best picture nominations. I think Ron Howard could be left out and Darren Aronofsky but I don't dare to go against Directors Guild.

I had to choose between Brad Pitt and Richard Jenkins. I chose Jenkins as I don't see Brangelina happening and I cannot replace Angelina Jolie (she can be snubbed but she is better choice for me than Brad). If she is snubbed maybe Brad can get in.

From Sally Hawkins, Angelina Jolie and Melissa Leo I chose the first two. Melissa Leo can happen, even Kristin Scott Thomas. Kate Winslet can be snubbed (hope not), but this is the way I will go.

Critics Choice reactions

I haven't given up on Revolutionary Road. I am surprised that it was completely snubbed which is very odd. I think we will have to wait and see atleast the Golden Globe and SAG noms. Critics Choice awards used to be very good indicator on Academy Awards but last year wasn't so good (Into the Wild). Therefore I don't think that game is over for Revolutionary Road just yet. AMPAS polls close 12 January and many things can still happen. However, somebody must show some love for Revolutionary Road in the near future. I think Globes will.

Anyway, Slumdog is in. Cate for leading is confirmed. Robert Downey Jr sounds good. But the Revolutionary Road thing must wait for now. If it isn't in there are spots to fill: Dev Petal for supporting and so on. I don't see Brad Pitt or Angelina Jolie happening. And the Dark Knight for Best picture; really? I need to be convinced.

And how about The Reader? Apparently Critics liked it but is it too late for Ralph Fiennes to be nominated?

I made a couple new updates. I need a couple more days with Slumdog Millionaire. I am convinced with Marisa Tomei (supporting) and almost with Cate Blanchett (leading). Directors are hard to tell as I am not convinced with the best pictures yet. Next week will tell us more; or it makes everything even more confusing.

More predictions

Ok, more new ideas: Kate Winslet for the double, Benjamin Button for Best Picture etc. I am still looking for a spot for Cate Blanchett (leading/supporting); how could she not get nominated this year? Every second year I get to keep my hopes up for Ralph Fiennes. Now I am keeping my fingers crossed for supporting actor in the Reader. Marisa Tomei seems to have good chances and so on.
