To ERWIN MELZNER for the overall concept including the optical and cooling systems, VOLKER SCHUMACHER for the optical design, and TIMO MÜLLER for the mechanical design, of the Arrimax 18/12 lighting fixture for use in motion picture production. With its choice of vari-focus and specular reflectors, the superior optical and mechanical design of this lighting fixture allows it to operate at 18,000 watts, producing unsurpassed light quality while its innovative cooling system keeps the housing safe to touch. [Lighting]
*
To JACQUES DELACOUX for the concept and electronic design, and ALEXANDRE LEUCHTER for the software and electronic design, of the Transvideo video-assist monitors for the motion picture industry. Using color LCD screens, the Transvideo monitors provide flicker-free video assist bright enough for use in sunlight and have become a ubiquitous tool in both spherical and anamorphic cinematography. [Systems]
*
To BRUNO COUMERT and JACQUES DEBIZE for the optical design, and DOMINIQUE CHERVIN and CHRISTOPHE REBOULET for the mechanical design, of the compact and lightweight Angenieux 15-40 and 28-76 zoom lenses for handheld motion picture photography. With focus and zoom functions that can be easily controlled by either the operator or focus puller while filming handheld, these lightweight zoom lenses demonstrate a very high degree of engineering, supporting both ease of use and quick interchange. [Lenses and Filters]

[Lenses and Filters]
JOHN A. BONNER MEDAL OF COMMENDATION
*
To Mark Kimball in appreciation for outstanding service and dedication in upholding the high standards of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

How did I do: 19/24

I thought I did ok but apparently this was my best year with predicting the winners.

It's great to move on with new films and nominees.

21 February 2009

My final predictions

My final predictions are here:

Actor: Mickey Rourke
S. Actor: Heath Ledger
Actress: Kate Winslet
S. Actress: Penelope Cruz
Animated Feature: WALL-E
Art Direction: Benjamin Button
Cinematography: Slumdog
Costume Design: The Duchess
Directing: Slumdog
Documentary Feature: Man on Wire
Documentary Short: The Witness
Editing: Slumdog
Foreign Language Film: Waltz with Bashir
Makeup: Benjamin Button
Original Score: Slumdog
Original Song: Jai Ho
Picture: Slumdog
Short Film Animated: Presto
Short Film Live Action: Toyland
Sound Editing: The Dark Knight
Sound Mixing: The Dark Knight
Visual Effects: Benjamin Button
Adapted Screenplay: Slumdog
Original Screenplay: Milk

No Guts, No Glory:

Supporting Actress: Marisa Tomei
Animated Feature: Kung-Fu Panda
Original Screenplay: WALL-E

I hope Mickey Rourke wins; I have absolutely nothing against Sean Penn but I am sure he will win once again some day. And please give finally the Oscar to Kate Winslet. I cannot believe there is a chance that the supporting actor would go to anyone except Heath. In supporting actress I cannot go against the general conses (Penelope Cruz) but I still would not be surprised if Marisa Tomei wins. Picture and director will go to Slumdog. In animated feature WALL-E should absolutely win as it won so many awards in the Guilds and with the critics in so many categories - but the academy sometimes votes strangely. If this goes wrong, Kung-Fu Panda wins. The same thing is with Foreign Language Film - the winner is not usually the most expected - therefore you can expect any other win except Waltz with Bashir (my prediction anyway).

It will be Slumdog's night and it will be great!

23 January 2009

How did I do

Not so well but as I expected.

I missed:

  • Brad Pitt (Clint)
  • Melissa Leo (Sally Hawkins)
  • Kate Winslet - The Reader (Kate Winslet - Revolutionary Road)
  • Michael Shannon (Dev Patel)
  • Amy Adams (Kate Winslet)
  • The Dark Knight (The Reader)
  • Stephen Daldry (Christopher Nolan)

The big six: 23/30

Missed screenplays:

  • Frozen River
  • Happy-Go-Lucky
  • In Bruges

The big eight: 30/40

The rest:

Not even counted yet...

There were things I had coming: no The Dark Knight. I knew it would'nt make it but I couldn't go against the consensus. I feel sorry for all those who had hoped for it; we all have felt it. I felt it when Fellowship of the Ring did not win the best picture. And most recently when Brokeback Mountain lost best picture for Crash - I was seriously thinking of giving up this hobby.

I had many of my misses on my alternate list or in no guts, no glory - but they do not count, do they. And Brangelina did happen.

If had to choose the winners now the list would be:

  • Slumdog Millionaire
  • Danny Boyle
  • Mickey Rourke
  • Kate Winslet
  • Heath Ledger
  • Marisa Tomei

But we will see how it goes.

It's never been this hard

Oh brother, it's never been this hard... I think. I don't think this will be a good year; too many categories without a clue. I think I have too many nominations for Benjamin Button and The Dark Knight but what can do I. I can't decide against them.

Best picture:

I still don't feel confident about The Dark Knight but I don't have anything to replace it with. Suddenly I don't feel too good about Milk either but I am still keeping it. Maybe WALL-E can happen, who knows.

Alt: The Reader

Best director:

Usually there is one director without best picture nominations. I think Ron Howard could be left out and Darren Aronofsky but I don't dare to go against Directors Guild.

Alt: Darren Aronofsky

Best actor:

I had to choose between Brad Pitt and Richard Jenkins. I chose Jenkins as I don't see Brangelina happening and I cannot replace Angelina Jolie (she can be snubbed but she is better choice for me than Brad). If she is snubbed maybe Brad can get in.

Alt: Brad Pitt

Best actress:

From Sally Hawkins, Angelina Jolie and Melissa Leo I chose the first two. Melissa Leo can happen, even Kristin Scott Thomas. Kate Winslet can be snubbed (hope not), but this is the way I will go.

Alt: Melissa Leo

Supporting actor:

These predictions are pretty much the same as everyone else's. If there are surprises it could be Ralph Fiennes.

Alt: Ralph Fiennes - The Duchess

Supporting actress:

Pretty much the same as everyone else's.

Alt: Amy Adams

All the rest categories were hard. For some of them I had a feeling where to go (as the screenplays, editing) but some are just guesses. Too much for The Dark Knight and Benjamin Button but as I said I have no choices.

No guts, no glory:

* The Reader for Best picture
* Kate Winslet snubbed for Revolutionary Road
* Ralph Fiennes supporting actor for The Duchess
